UltraWood® Fact Sheet
The EPA approved labels for CCA wood preservatives have been amended to indicate that, effective December 31, 2003, CCA may be used only to treat wood or forest products that fall under the AWPA standards listed on the new label. Specifiers and treaters should review the label, along with the 2001 edition of the AWPA standards, to determine whether CCA can be used to treat the wood for any particular job. If the category of wood to be treated is not included within the AWPA standards listed on the label, CCA is not approved for that treatment, and CCA may not be used. CCA Label PDF(KB) Generally, the label authorizes use of CCA in most industrial and commercial applications. Most of those applications are heavy retention treatments of 0.50 or more pounds per cubic foot. The only standards under which lower retention treatments may be used are C9, C25, C28, C33 and C34. Dimension lumber historically treated with CCA to .25 or .40 under AWPA standard C2 must now be treated with alternative preservatives. Examples of CCA Uses that will be permissible under the new label language The following list is taken from the 2001 edition of the AWPA standards to illustrate examples of the types of wood that fall within each standard. While the list is not exhaustive, it does provide some examples of specific uses within each AWPA commodity standards that may be treated with CCA. High quality oil-based paints and stains are recommended. Water repellent coatings can be applied to improve the long-term surface appearance of UltraWood. Left uncoated or with clear water repellent coatings, UltraWood will weather to a natural grey color. It is important to ensure that the wood is dry and free from surface deposits prior to applying any coating. Nails, Fasteners and Fittings Hot dipped galvanized or stainless steel fasteners and fittings are recommended. Anti-corrosion coatings applied to fasteners and fittings in contact with treated wood will enhance long-term performance. Direct contact of UltraWood treated wood with aluminum fasteners and fittings is not recommended. Click here for Product Handling Information |
